Bio
My name is Dr. Sinéad McCarthy, my first name is pronounced “Shin-aid.” I am a licensed psychologist in Massachusetts and Vermont. I earned my bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Lesley University and my doctoral degree from William James College (formerly known as the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology).
My training and work have been in individual and group therapy settings ranging from schools, college counseling centers, addiction treatment, and outpatient services. I have provided therapy services to people across the lifespan and from various culturally and diagnostically diverse backgrounds. I also have training in neuropsychological assessment, and although I am not offering this service at this time, I am happy to review any testing you have completed to help you better understand the material and how to best utilize your strengths in various areas of your life.
Approach to therapy
There is no one-size-fits-all approach to therapy, I believe that the best approach to therapy is a collaborative, integrated model that meets the needs of the person sitting before me. As your therapist, I am here to learn about you – your experiences, relationships, and insights – to help you understand different themes that may be contributing to your current stressors. In order to get the most from the therapeutic experience, I strongly believe the patient has to be an active participant in the work. Together, we will assess the best steps to take based on your personal strengths and abilities. My hope is that through our work you will feel more confident, secure, and connected to yourself, your relationships, and your goals.
To reach these goals, I incorporate various evidence-based practices to help guide our work such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and motivational interviewing. These tools will allow us to explore how patterns may be impacting your life while also providing opportunities to identify your strengths. What we uncover together will be used as the foundation for our work, I will encourage you to build upon your current knowledge and skills to aid you in establishing new approaches and to utilize new resources. If you are open to learning more and ready to engage therapy, please reach out to me today for more information.
